What is the Women’s Program?

The Women’s Program is a program presented by the One in Four RV Tour presenters that compliments the already popular Men’s Program.  Because few women perceive themselves to be potential victims of rape, The Women’s Program focuses on how to identify men’s potentially high-risk behavior and how women can be effective bystanders with their friends in high-risk situations, particularly those involving alcohol.  In addition, the program focuses on how to help a friend recover from sexual assault without blaming the survivor.   

The Women’s Program has three goals:

• To enable women to recognize characteristics of high-risk perpetrators.
• To enable and empower women to intervene in potentially high-risk situations.
• To enable women to help rape survivors by giving them pertinent information about rape, a victim’s recovery from rape, and resources where more information can be found.

The Women’s Program is a researched based, educational program that engages participants.  The 45-minute program is a multi-media presentation that, similar to The Men’s Program, involves 6 stages:

1. The program begins by defining rape and sexual assault.
2. Participants watch a short video clip, The Undetected Rapist.  This video illustrates important characteristics of potential rapists by reenacting an interview between a male college student and a researcher.
3. The peer educators process the video with participants, identifying the principal elements of the video and rapist’s actions.
4. The peer educators discuss ways participants can help sexual assault survivors and explain that helping sexual assault survivors involves understanding the needs of the survivor as well as the limitations of yourself. 
5. The peer educators engage the participants in discussion and talk about how they can help their friends avoid risky situations.
6. Participants have the opportunity to request additional information or clarify key points from the presentation.
